Winterdance The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod

Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. Map and color photographs.

5 Stars The fine madness of long distance dog racing.
Paulsen, already a well known author of childrens’ books employs his easily readable style to describe and explain the somewhat arcane sport of dog racing and his own learning experience as he came to decide to run the race himself. This is probably one of the best books on long distance dog racing, the sometimes unusual people involved and the frozen world they live in, the dangers they face and the satisfaction they find as they and their dogs move from a rabble to become a team.
Paulsen has run the race himself and his descriptions of his dogs as he and they learned to work with each other are alone worth the price of the book.
Having said that, I came to feel that Paulsen is perhaps a better story teller than a reporter, and that nobody’s life is quite that hilarious as his seems to be. While it’s no great fault one begins to feel that some of the events he describes are embellished to some degree, although the only real error I noticed was when he said, “…Cook was a fool who wouldn’t use dogs and died because he tried to use horses.” Cook of course was the medical doctor who entered into a long running dispute with Admiral Peary about who was first to reach the North Geographic Pole, and the man Paulsen means to refer to is probably the Englishman Scott who wouldn’t use dogs because he couldn’t bear the thought of having to kill them to eat. Overly sentimental perhaps, but hardly foolish.
Stll, this is a minor criticism. Go and buy Paulsen’s book and travel with him over the thousand miles to Nome. I think you’ll be glad you did.
5 Stars Brillitant
Get a copy. Read it. Transport yourself to another world.
My wife recommended it to me — “Five stars!” — and now I recommend it to all my book-loving friends. FIVE STARS!
Enjoy!

5 Stars VERY –excellent!!!
I’m an Iditarod volunteer and this by far is the best book I’ve ever read on the race in Alaska. I just finished reading for the 2nd time. I am loaning it to 2 of my friends that are going to Alaska with me to be Iditarod volunteers. This gives you the plain truth, check point by check describing the route to Nome, and all the trails inbetween. His wit and basic down to earth style of writing makes the book a real page turner. I really really enjoyed it. I’d say it is MY favorite all time BOOK ! !
5 Stars A wonderful account
Wow, this book was amazing. I didn’t know much about the Iditarod, and the author was very informative. But to say that makes it sound boring, which it was not! I always thought dog-sledding was just going straight through the snow/ice. Boy was I ever wrong. From being dragged for miles to dropping off cliffs, sled, dogs, musher and all… Paulsen is an excellent storyteller. You couldn’t find a more descriptive account of what it would be like to race the Iditarod.
This was the kind of book that I was genuinely sorry to finish. It’s been three days since I finished it and I’m still in withdrawal. His addiction to dog racing is contagious.
A wonderful account.
5 Stars One of the funniest books I have ever read.
Didn’t have any idea what to expect of this book when I bought it. It was one of the most hilarous books I’ve ever read, starting a few pages in! I think the part where he has matches in his pocket and gets pulled across the yard by the dogs like a meteorite, to the dismay of his wife, is my favorite part. I wont give away any more, but it’s one laugh after the next, combined with powerful insights that have deep meaning.I enjoyed hearing his perspective on caring for animals, very wonderful to see him treat the animals with respect and kindness. I read it then gave it to my mom, who loved it, then gave it to my husband, who loved it- and we all ending up laughing around the dinner table. I think most people would find something wonderful about it and enjoy it from beginning to end. A very special book.

5 Stars A MOST HAVE FOR BODY BUILDERS!!!!
I have to say this book has everything you would ever need for your body building goals. It really takes off the need of purchasing a ton of fitness magazine. Its packed with a great amount of info, stacked into a good size book which weighs a Ton. I will recommend it to anyone.
5 Stars Great Book!
I love this book! It has everything from workouts to plans to what you should eat and more. I saved a few bucks too.
5 Stars Beautiful book!
This book was ordered for my son, he is into body building. I was very impressed with this thick book. It is full of amazing pictures and has alot of information. He loves this book! I highly recommend it if you are into body building!
5 Stars I loved this book
I still don’t own this book and that’s a shame. I read it every time (1-2 a week) I go to Barnes and Noble and I truly love it. It has great and lots of information. Some parts might be intended for beginners but others help people like me to who like to create their own workouts, learn about the science behind and more on nutrition. It defines different training types (21s, Pyramids, Super Sets, Trisets, Giantsets, etc) clearly and tells their benefits and how to use them. It describes a lot of things scientifically. It also has a sample workouts from the best in the business. Every person has a unique body so you can’t just use the same workout for everyone and expect the same results. So, you have to try different things to see which is best for yourself and this book helps you by giving variety and lots of ideas. I would definitely recommend if you like working out with weights - you don’t even have to be a body builder.
4 Stars Comprehensive, but not in depth
This book is extremely comprehensive, and filled with a ton of high quality information, gorgeous pictures, and advice from the pros. It is lso brand new, so the information is 100% current. On the other hand, it does not go very deeply into a lot of the details. For example, there is a good description of various workout schedules, but no examples of what sample routines in most of them would look like. Likewise, the descriptions of the exercizes are woefully inadequete, and relegated to an appendix, with only a few pictures (typically 1 picture for every 5 or so items). If you are not familiar with the words that describe exercizes, you will have a hard time understanding these descriptions.
I really can’t compare this book to many other sources; the only other body building book I’ve read is The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding : The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Comparing the two, I think that this book covers a lot more ground, is much more modern regarding some things (you have to keep in mind Arnold’s background and take a lot of what he says with a grain a salt… much of it is old wive’s tales…). for example, I’ve tried Arnold’s recommended 6 day split, and like he said, I got awesome results… but at the same time, every 6 or so weeks, my body would collapse and I would need to lay off for at least a week. This book talks about that, and I feel a lot better know that it isn’t just me, and that the 6 day split is too grueling for most people. I am looking forwards to trying some of the alternatives now, and no longer feel like I’d better “slacking”. But Arnold has a MUCH better section on how to perform the exercizes.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a good survey of the bodybuilding landscape, and then supplementing with a book devoted specifically to “how to perform exercizes”, or even Arnold’s Encyclopedia.

5 Stars the encyclopedia of immaturity
This is a great book which all ages can get a good laugh. Not sure if we are going to try these such silly things but we enjoy reading it and laughing and sharing with other around the camp fire.
5 Stars GREAT FUN!
This is a truly fun book, crammed with oddities. My 13 year old is devouring it. We got two extra copies to give as birthday gifts to our grandsons, who will also find it a challenge. It’s well done, although
the paper is a bit flimsy & I have my doubts how how they will work
oin this ring-bonder format. The cover binding is beautifully done, also
with wit & good design sense. An excellent purchase for kids or
adults alike.
5 Stars Encyclopedia of Immaturity
This was a gift for my 9 year old and he absolutely loves it. Some of the topics are silly but somehow he finds it funny. My son loves to read so this is just a good fun book to have.
5 Stars Just plain fun! Reminds me of Dynamite Magazine
My 9-year old reviewing partner loves this book. She says it’s hilarious and entertaining, and “makes me actually want to do the stuff.”
This would be great for a long trip, or a 10-year old birthday gift (for a ten-year old who wasn’t already expecting to receive an iPod from you).
If you liked The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Daring Book for Girls you’ll groove to The Encyclopedia of Immaturity. As you might expect from the title, it’s in the same spirit, but a little more irreverent. The Encyclopedia of Immaturity reminds me a lot of the classic 1970’s Scholastic magazines, Dynamite and Bananas. If you fondly remember these magazines you have to get this book…for the kids in your life, of course.
5 Stars Sit down before opening
I bought this book as a gag gift for my secret santa because I figured I would try something different than the usual bath set this year, besides, who doesn’t like to laugh? Well, when I started flipping through it I laughed so hard that I fell on the floor and bruised my tail bone! Ouch! No kidding, sit down before opening this book. Some pages are cornier than others, but it’s mostly good fun. I’m in my twenties, my mother is in her fifties, and the friend I bought it for is a physician - and we all giggled over it like little kids. If you are considering this book for a child it will definately keep them very busy… but naughty children may get themselves into a little more trouble than usual!
Dave Pelzs Short Game Bible Master the Finesse Swing and Lower Your Score Dave Pelz Scoring Game Series
August 3, 2009 by Sports Tips · Leave a Comment

Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible is the first book in a four-book series, The Dave Pelz Scoring Game Series. The next volume in the series will be Dave Pelz’s Putting Bible.
“He who rules the short game collects the gold.”
–Dave Pelz’s Golden Rule of Golf
Fed up with trying to imitate the pros, buying the latest expensive equipment, and seeing your handicap stay the same? The first book by bestselling author and internationally revered golf instructor Dave Pelz since Putt Like the Pros, his bestselling classic, Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible can show you the way to lower scores by improving your short game. The result of decades of scientific research studying thousands of golfers, Dave’s philosophy is as simple as it is revolutionary and groundbreaking: Instead of practicing the wrong things the right way, or the right things the wrong way, Pelz shows you how to find your own personal weaknesses and how to improve them to efficiently lower your scores. Packed with all the knowledge, charts, and photos needed to learn from the master, Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible is the essential book for every golfer who’s looking to improve his or her game.
Dave’s approach to golf is easy to understand: 80 percent of the strokes golfers lose to par are determined by their play within 100 yards of the green–the crucial scoring game. The most important and yet the least focused-on aspect of golf, your short game, can indeed make or break your entire game. And nobody teaches the short game like Dave Pelz. His renowned golf schools and clinics focus exclusively on putting and the short game, attracting top players like Tom Kite, Colin Montgomerie, two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, reigning PGA champion Vijay Singh, Steve Elkington, Payne Stewart, Peter Jacobsen, and many LPGA players including Annika Sorenstam and Liselotte Neumann. The pros know, as you are about to learn, that while others teach golfers how to swing, Dave Pelz teaches golfers how to score . . . and win.
A former physicist for NASA, Dave brings a scientific rigor to his research and instruction that has made him the top short-game expert in the world. Dave has observed and then taught thousands of golfers to improve their ability to score better. The years he has spent studying the short game, including chipping, lobs, pitches, distance wedges, and bunker play, have resulted in an unequaled expertise and a fascinating body of knowledge on golf, with the statistics and data to back it up. In this new book, Dave for the first time shares the understanding and techniques he has taught the pros, including a wide array of innovative tests and exercises for mastering those deceptive and high-pressure shots of the short game.
Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible is an essential book for golfers of all levels. Covering everything golfers need to know to improve their short game, Dave’s system can–and will–help you to consistently shoot lower scores.

5 Stars Great!!!
Amazing book. No downfalls to this book. Received it really quick and in great condition. Very happy with everything!
5 Stars Best Short Game Instruction
Highly Recommend.
Genuine and outstanding book on short game. Title is appropriate, because the book is reference sized. That is a good thing.
This book is worthy and worthwhile, along with Dave Pelz’s “Putting Bible,” Butch Harmon’s “Four Cornerstones of Winning Golf,” Hogan’s “Five Lessons,” Tiger Woods’ “How I Play Golf,” and of course Harvey Penick’s “Little Red Book.”
5 Stars Great Bible for Golf Short game
Almost close to a real Bible for Golf Short Game. If I grade this book contents, I would like to give “99 out of 100″. I had read and reviewed more than 10 golf books. I would like to give this book (Dave Pelz’s book) the best book. I think this book is more effective for players who have scores below 100 and not effective for beginners. My score is about 90 (3.5 years).
4 Stars best on the short game
I am new to golf but after a few years really understand the importance of the short game as I see most of my score evaporate within 40 yards of the green. Although David Pelz has developed a system that makes sense and most likely works you have to spend a lot of time getting to that point. That said, he gives more useful information about how to play the short game than anything else I have read. The book is a bit repetitive but I think that is his way of bringing the point home. As an engineer I can appreciate his use of scientific methods to show how certain clubs hit a certain distance will go to the pin. It is this kind of information that I can take to the course. I will not live long enough to use his 3×4 system as I would have to golf daily for hours to build up his prescribed data base! I have read and reread this book 4 times or more. I quess that is why it is called the short game BIBLE. It would have gotten 5 stars if the photos were better and more current as well as more of them.
5 Stars Best in class for short game improvement advise
Dave Pelz has provided the best in class advices for improving short game for all level of golfer. After reading and practicing step-by-step techniques given in this book. I have a much better understanding of short game and how to improve them. Although it is a thick book (as a text book), but I do enjoy reading and learning from the book very much.
I strongly recommend this book to a serious golfer who would like to improve his short game skill. I just love the book!
